An update June 2025

Following NICE guidance there will be a gradual introduction of these weight loss treatments in primary care (your GP surgery)

At present the ICB (see letter below) are commissioning a weight loss service (essentially a contract with the medical centre to provide the weight loss service) which should start towards the end of the year:it will be rolled out in different phases with different patient eligibility.

As per the information below, Harcourt has carried out a search of its 13,000 patients and has found that only 15 patients will currently meet the eligibility criteria for this year, this based on:

NHS England first cohort criteria:
*Patients who qualify for tirzepatide must have a BMI of more than 40 and be living with four or more weightrelated conditions, such as:

  • Pre-existing cardiovascular disease
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperlipidaemia
  • Established diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (sleep clinic confirmation via sleep study) and
    treatment indicated
  • Type 2 diabetes

Clearly this is disappointing for many patients who wish to try this treatment, it is currently available privately from many providers but at significant cost.

Please do not ask us to prescribe this medication for you

There is currently no contract to provide the medication and it is unlikely you will meet the eligibility criteria. If you are one of the 15 patients that meets this criteria, we will contact you in due course once the commissioning arrangements have been fulfilled.
